Overview
Apart from focusing on understanding the biology, pathology, immunology, diagnosis, control and management of infectious diseases, the curriculum incorporates training in various methods of diagnosis including genomics and molecular techniques to explore disease pathogenesis.
The Medical Microbiology programme offered by the University of Nairobi also equips students with skills and ability to teach and carry out research in the field of microbiology.
The field of Medical Microbiology aims at diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the spread of infection in hospitals and the community. Although the course is laboratory-based,it makes a major contribution to clinical infection management

General requirements
- Holders of a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree, Bachelors of Veterinary Medicine degree, Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree, Bachelor of Pharmacy degree, Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree and Bachelor of Nursing degree from the University of Nairobi, or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Nairobi as being of comparable academic status.
- Holders of Bachelor of Science upper second class degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by the University of Nairobi senate.
- Holders of Bachelor of Science lower second class degree in Biomedical Sciences with at least three years working experience in a relevant field of microbiology or with a postgraduate diploma in Microbiology.
- In addition to provision of evidence of eligibility for admission, candidates may be required by the Faculty to appear for interview to determine their suitability for admission.
