
Overview
On the Media Production (Film and Television) programme of the University of Sunderland will give you the skills, knowledge, experience, and confidence to be employable in the film, TV, and media industry, either in one or multiple professional roles.
The course is made up of four core practical modules and it's been awarded the ScreenSkills Select accreditation. The course aims to stretch your creativity and maximise your sense of personal fulfilment.
Key facts
- Throughout the course, you'll work on a range of projects and develop your practical production skills in areas including screenwriting, camera, sound, editing, lighting, colour grading, producing, and directing.
- Your learning experience will be greatly enhanced by our lecturing team who are experts in their areas of specialism and by our first-class equipment including specialised cameras, sound recording equipment, movement rigs, and professional editing software packages such as Avid Media Composer.
- You'll work on group production projects supported by workshops, studio sessions, and tutorials, as well as masterclasses led by industry professionals. You'll also have the option to learn editing and sustainable production alongside other industry-facing opportunities.
Career ready
- Previous students on the course have graduated and entered the industry in various roles. Our alumni are working as directors, producers, camera operators, editors, and videographers.
- Some graduates enter the industry as freelancers, others are employed by media companies, and some students set up their own media companies.

General requirements
- We usually require applicants to hold an honours degree in a related discipline. We may ask you to undertake a short course that covers essential skills and knowledge before you join the main master's course.
We'll ask you to prepare a portfolio of work you've completed so far:
- Completed projects: A variety of work, ideally fully completed film or TV projects. This could include your module work, freelance commissions, personal work, or competition briefs. Please provide a video link and description of your role in the production.
- Other work: If you've produced any 2D or 3D work, please provide video or photograph links to the work. If you have a performance background, please include links to any relevant performances you've taken part in.
- Proposal: A brief proposal of what you might want to do on this course.
