Overview

The History (Intellectual History) programme offered by University of Oxford is designed to improve your practical and intellectual grasp of research processes, ability to conceptualise and engage with historical problems, and enlarge your understanding of the historical and historiographical context in which your own research is set. The course can serve as either a free-standing graduate qualification, or as a springboard to doctoral study. Students wishing to proceed to doctoral study will be encouraged to develop their doctoral proposals during the first few months of the MSt. Skills training and option-choice are flexible and open-ended, to allow you to gain the knowledge and training needed to complete your research project.

Key Facts

Taking a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to Intellectual History, with both chronological and global reach, you will have the opportunity to study thinkers and ideas from the fourth to the twenty-first centuries, in diverse transnational geographical contexts. The course is designed to encourage students to work in and between areas such as Global Intellectual History, the History of Scholarship, the History of Science, the History of Art, Historiography and the History of Political Ideas.

Creating the Commonwealth: Politics and Religion in Grotius, Hobbes and Locke
The Enlightenment, c. 1680-1800: Ideas and the public sphere
Modern political and social theory, c.1790-1930
The British Marxist historians: Christopher Hill, Rodney Hilton, Eric Hobsbawm and Edward Thompson

General requirements

An undergraduate degree with a minimum of 68% overall (equivalent to a high upper second class degree) and 68% for the dissertation, in a relevant discipline in the humanities or social sciences.
For applicants with a bachelor's degree from the USA, the minimum overall GPA that is normally required to meet the undergraduate-level requirement is 3.6 out of 4.0. However, successful candidates normally have a GPA of 3.75 or higher.
You must have experience of working on a historical subject at undergraduate level, but are not required to have a single honours/major degree in history. In this case, you must ensure that your proposed dissertation topic is related to your previous expertise.
