Overview

The History (British and European History 1700-1850) programme offered by University of Oxford has a sustained period devoted to archival research and writing, and is designed to give you a thorough training in historical research, improve your ability to conceptualise and engage with historical problems, and enlarge your understanding of the historical and historiographical context in which your own research is set. All strands in the programme can serve as either free-standing graduate qualifications, or as a springboard to doctoral study. Students wishing to proceed to doctoral study will be encouraged to develop their doctoral proposals during the first few months of the second year. Skills training and option-choice are flexible and open-ended, to allow you to gain the knowledge and training needed to complete your research project.

Key Facts

Oxford’s historians have risen to the challenge of finding ways of characterising the long eighteenth century that transcend older notions of a passage from ‘traditional’ to ‘modern’, addressing questions about the Enlightenment and all types of revolutions that occurred during the long eighteenth century.

You will be able to access outstanding print and digital resources as well as attend specialist faculty seminars and interdisciplinary seminars in other departments. General requirements

An undergraduate degree with a minimum of 68% overall (equivalent to a high upper second class degree) and 68% for the dissertation, in a relevant discipline in the humanities or social sciences.
For applicants with a bachelor's degree from the USA, the minimum overall GPA that is normally required to meet the undergraduate-level requirement is 3.6 out of 4.0. However, successful candidates normally have a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

You must have experience of working on a historical subject at undergraduate level, but are not required to have a single honours/major degree in history.
No Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or GMAT scores are sought.
