Overview

Understand the scale and nature of sustainability as a global issue and how this varies across the global north and south. You will recognise the key enabling and constraining, political and institutional contexts which affect sustainable business practice.

You will also:

• Gain a critical understanding of the key global sustainability debates and challenges

• Explore key theories of sustainability transitions and sustainable business

• Understand how to critically engage with sustainable business perspectives to facilitate societal transitions to sustainable futures

• Develop an understanding of research methods and analytics, including techniques of data collection and analysis necessary for developing a critical perspective on sustainability challenges and sustainable solutions

Career opportunities

Graduates of the Sustainable Business programme offered by The University of Manchester are prepared for roles where understanding sustainability, organisational change and stakeholder engagement is essential. 

Alumni typically progress into sustainability-related roles across private, public and third-sector organisations, applying a business perspective to environmental and social challenges. 

Career pathways include sustainability management, strategy, policy, responsible business, consulting and roles supporting organisational change. The programme also supports graduates aiming to influence sustainability transitions through advocacy, persuasion and leadership, recognising the complexity, trade-offs and contested nature of sustainable change across industries and institutions.

AMBS Master’s students have dedicated careers support designed to build employability and connect you with employers. You’ll have access to employability sessions covering applications, CVs, interviews and LinkedIn; tailored workshops with feedback; and one-to-one support with a careers consultant. 

You can also engage with employer and alumni insights through guest speaker events, and keep track of opportunities through the online careers platform. The AMBS postgraduate careers support works closely with the University Careers Service, giving access to careers fairs, employer presentations and advertised vacancies.
