Prospective international students should be advised that there are some customs regarding private accommodation in Japan. When renting apartments, a Japanese guarantor should be found. Furthermore, an advanced payment of up to six month’s rent is also likely to be levied. This covers payments to the apartment owner and real estate agent, and a deposit (with only the deposit is likely to be returned upon departure).International students sometimes have difficulty in finding an appropriate Japanese guarantor. To help solve this problem, there is the Housing Surety System for International Students in Fukuoka. If you can not find a guarantor and would like to rent an apartment managed by a rental agent who approves of this housing guarantor system, the Fukuoka International Association can act as a joint guarantor for you. After enrollment, students will be able to obtain detailed information regarding this system.
