Overview
The Desert Studies - Agroinformatics at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev major prepares students to lead in the rapidly evolving field of smart agriculture, a multidisciplinary domain that bridges agriculture, environmental science, and advanced computational technologies. Combining principles from mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering, the program offers a unique blend of theoretical foundations and hands-on research experience. Students gain proficiency in a broad set of cutting-edge tools, including remote sensing, image processing, computer vision, data science, artificial intelligence, geographic information systems (GIS), and programming. The curriculum integrates core scientific courses with practical applications, addressing real-world environmental and agricultural challenges.
The Scope of Agro-Informatics:
Modern agriculture produces vast and complex datasets from diverse sources such as field-based sensors, UAVs, multi- and hyperspectral satellite imagery, and genomic analyses. Agro-Informatics focuses on managing and analysing this data using computational and information technologies. The goal is to equip students with the knowledge and tools to harness “Big Data” for improving decision-making in agricultural systems, particularly in the context of sustainability and resilience in arid and semi-arid regions.
Students learn to process and integrate diverse data streams through algorithms, statistical models, and artificial intelligence methods, including machine learning and deep learning. These skills enable a deep understanding of biological, climatic, and environmental processes, supporting precision agriculture and smart resource management.
This specialization is ideal for students passionate about using advanced data-driven methods to solve critical agricultural and environmental problems. Graduates will be well-positioned to contribute to sustainable food production and ecosystem preservation in the face of climate and resource challenges.
