Overview
The Master's Degree in Geography and Territorial Sciences from Politecnico di Torino trains professionals capable of integrating cultural, socioeconomic, technical, and planning knowledge for the analysis, organization, and management of land and the environment. In doing so, it contributes to the formation of a new generation of citizens and qualified experts capable of effectively addressing the enormous social, economic, and political challenges of our time: the environmental crisis, global urbanization, socio-spatial inequalities, and geopolitical tensions.
Course organization and paths
The first year of the program includes courses aimed at acquiring basic knowledge of physical geography and human geography . Students will take several courses essential for understanding environmental, socio-cultural, and political phenomena linked to major processes of global change. At the same time, they will learn to use the main IT tools for representing, analyzing, and managing land.
During the second year, through electives and "free credits," students will be able to hone their skills while pursuing their academic interests and professional goals by choosing one of three different training areas.
- GEOMORPHOLOGICAL RISKS AND CLIMATE CHANGE: This specialization focuses on the analysis of the physical elements and processes of the geosphere, as well as atmospheric phenomena and climate events applied to weather and climate forecasting. The goal is to train professionals who are experts in the conservation of natural resources, the prevention of geomorphological risks, and the mitigation and adaptation to the effects of climate change. Courses in this specialization are offered primarily in Italian ( Tutor: Prof. Giandomenico FUBELLI).
- PROTECTION AND ENHANCEMENT OF LANDSCAPE AND HERITAGE : integrates skills in analyzing the physical, historical, and cultural components of landscape and the environment; in doing so, it trains professionals with expertise in interpreting the physical transformations of the territory, capable of working particularly in the field of protection and promotion of cultural and landscape heritage. Courses in this specialization are offered primarily in Italian ( Tutor: Professor Paola PRESSENDA).
- URBAN AND POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY : analyzes the political and power processes that operate at different territorial levels and influence the "urban domain." The course trains experts in the social, economic, and political processes that structure different urban and regional systems. Courses in this specialization are offered in English ( Tutor: Prof. Mara FERRERI).
