Law from University of Cambridge candidates may apply to continue to the PhD by submitting a Postgraduate Application Form to the Postgraduate Admissions Office via the Applicant Portal by the relevant course deadline.
Key facts
For a candidate to be awarded the MLitt, their thesis must have demonstrated all of the criteria below:
- provides evidence of a useful contribution to the field of study;
- systematic understanding of knowledge and critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights in the field of study;
- includes critical evaluation of current methodologies and wider research in the area of study;
- provides evidence of an understanding of applicable techniques for research and advanced academic enquiry;
- submission of work of a quality and quantity expected for two years of full-time postgraduate research (or part-time equivalent)
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- A thesis, not exceeding 60,000 words inclusive of footnotes but exclusive of appendices, bibliography, table of contents and any other preliminary matter, is referred to two examiners (normally an internal examiner and an external examiner), appointed by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Law. Each examiner shall make an independent report to the Degree Committee on the thesis. Students are required to attend an oral examination (if appropriate, an Independent Chair may be appointed to attend the oral examination), after which the examiners will submit a joint report to the Degree Committee stating whether or not they recommend the award of the degree.
