Overview
The Programme has been designed to create skilled practitioners who can deliver high-quality prosthetic care, adapt to new technologies, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the field.
Key facts
The MSc in Prosthodontics and Implantology from University of Greater Manchester is designed to equip students with the comprehensive knowledge and essential clinical skills required to restore oral function, aesthetics, and health. The programme is a carefully blended mix that seamlessly intertwines advanced theoretical knowledge with extensive clinical practice enhancing expertise significantly preparing students for the complexities of advanced prosthetic care.
Clinical training is a vital part of the course and students will engage in supervised clinical practice, where they can apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. This hands-on experience includes working with patients in areas such as fixed and removable prosthodontics, implant dentistry, and maxillofacial prosthetics. Critical to this training is developing patient management skills, which encompass comprehensive treatment planning and communication.
One of the critical components of this course is the emphasis on 3D imaging technologies. These technologies not only improve diagnosis and treatment planning but also facilitate the visualization of complex dental structures essential to the safe practice of implant dentistry. Students will learn how to leverage these advancements to create highly detailed digital treatment plans and workflows. This skill is essential for Prosthodontists, who must develop comprehensive and tailored treatment strategies for their patients.
The programme also focuses on occlusal diagnosis and management fundamental to successful Prosthodontics, as it affects the function and aesthetics of dental restorations. The curriculum will cover various occlusal principles and their applications in everyday practice. Students will engage in hands-on training and case studies that explore how to diagnose and manage occlusal discrepancies effectively.
A core theme is aesthetic management as the ability to achieve aesthetic harmony is crucial. This program incorporates digital smile design principles that enable students to create visually pleasing restorations tailored to each patient's unique facial features and expectations. By utilising digital tools and design software, students will gain the proficiency needed to visualize and plan aesthetic outcomes before committing to any restorative procedure. This proactive approach not only enhances the predictability of results but also significantly improves patient confidence and satisfaction.
The MSc in Prosthodontics and Implantology offers a strong foundation in research methodology, encouraging students to engage with and contribute to the advancing body of Prosthodontic knowledge. By understanding how to conduct rigorous research and critically evaluate existing literature, students will be prepared to implement evidence-based practices in their treatment plans. This skill set is invaluable for anyone looking to lead in the field, as it fosters a culture of continual improvement and innovation within their practices.
The programme has been carefully planned to ensure that modules provide a scaffolded approach to learning, with earlier modules underpinning later ones and the contents of one module complementing another taught in the academic year. For example, after having spent 90 hours in the 1st semester doing practical work in the Dental Manikins’ Dental Skills Laboratory simulating the clinical environment, you will enter the training placement environment working with patients.
Apart from the well-established, in academia, written assessments (exams, reports, etc.), this Programme includes other more contemporary types of assessment, that are also being used by other organisations, like the Royal College of Surgeons and the General Dental Council (GDC). The broad range of assessment types in the Programme aims at consolidating your learning. Some such assessments’ type examples include Observed Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), professional discussions, etc.
