Overview
This Sports Science course from Reykjavík University two-year, 120 ECTS research-based master’s programme, taught fully in English. It combines academic rigour with practical applications, emphasising independent work, current research methods, and hands-on training.
The curriculum covers core areas such as training physiology, performance analysis, psychology, nutrition, and statistics. Students complete a 30-ECTS final thesis project tailored to their chosen specialisation.
Students select one of three pathways:
- Coaching — Focus on training elite and competitive athletes, integrating principles of physiology, training philosophy, psychology, and nutrition to optimise performance.
- Performance Analysis — Emphasises sports-related data science: video analysis, GPS tracking, and statistical methods to assess and enhance athlete performance.
- Sport Psychology — Evidence-based sport psychology strategies to support athlete well-being and performance, and to apply psychological methods in other performance domains.
Internship opportunities aligned with each specialisation are available.

Curriculum:
- Sport Science is taught in modular blocks, where most courses run for five weeks followed by a project week. Students take core courses in research methods, applied statistics, physiology, measurement and performance enhancement, alongside modules linked to their chosen specialisation: Coaching, Performance Analysis or Sport Psychology.
- Each pathway includes advanced subject-specific courses, practical training and, in some cases, internship opportunities. During the second year, students deepen their expertise through specialised modules and elective options.
- The programme concludes with a 30-ECTS master’s thesis conducted within the selected specialisation, allowing students to apply research skills to real-world performance, coaching or psychological contexts.

- Applicants must hold a completed bachelor’s degree (or be in a final bachelor year at the time of their application) in a relevant field such as sports science, physical therapy, biology, education, health science, or another related discipline.
- The programme is fully taught in English.
