Overview
The MA Artificial Intelligence in Material Sciences program from Southern Federal University is truly interdisciplinary combining strong theoretical knowledge and practical skill in modern materials characterization techniques and some practical skills and valuable tips on the application of artificial intelligent in the automatization of chemical processes, data analysis and visualization.
We aimed to share our knowledge in modern chemistry (such as implementation of flow-through microfluidic-based synthesis), advanced materials diagnostics (such an in situ and operando as well as multi-spectroscopic techniques) and application of AI algorithms in acceleration of time and resource consuming quantum chemistry simulations, data analysis and computer vision.
Apart from the common and mandatory courses the programme contains kit of courses that can be chosen by the students depending on their specialization, that makes possible to pass the programme by one of the following tracks:
- Engineering/Chemical track
- Data-driven material science
An engeenirng/chemical track assumes deeper specialization in the possible mechanism of automatization of chemical synthesis and/or processes (e.g. like catalysis), aimed to development of engeeniring solutions and generating of “chemical” ideas on the way of creation of autonomous or robotic systems for sustainable production of materials with desired or advanced properties.
While the second track “Data-driven materials science” invoked in implementation of AI in solving actual and challenging problems in modern materials science, such as
- (i)computer vision technology for treatment and analysis of scientific related images/video;
- (ii) prediction of materials properties based on their structure on the atomistic level;
- (iii) advanced visualization and analysis of spectroscopic data – bringing the gap between spectral descriptors and materials properties.
On preparing the master thesis our students working with really relevant tasks, which is confirmed by the fundings engaged on the different projects as well as the interest in collaboration from different leading institutions in Russia and industrial partners.
We do believe that our programme is sufficient choice for those who want to continue developing in the field of natural sciences of informational technologies or automatization, for those who ready for their own discoveries and who not afraid of challenging, but interesting and exciting problems and tasks appeared in the field of modern materials science!

General requirements
Having a diploma which confirm your qualification at the previous academic is mandatory for both Russian and foreign students. Both bachelor (BCs) or masters (MCs) diploma will be accepted.
For student awarded by the diploma related with their previous qualification level the following specialization codes will be suitable to apply for “AI in materials science” master’s program:
- For foreign students we suggest that previous qualification in the field of physics, physical chemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering and chemical technology, chemistry of materials, biochemistry, mathematics and algorithms, robotics technologies and mechatronics will be accepted.
- No special certificates or diplomas confirming the level of English is required both for Russian and foreign candidates. At the same time, we kindly encourage our students to estimate their capability to study in English language program before taking the decision to join our program.
Technological requirements
It is appreciated if students have their own laptop operating on Windows 10 (or further versions) with a moderate computational resource. If no, students will have a possibility to work in computational classes equipped with stationary PC or laptops will be granted from our side for the period of study (for 2 years).
No special office or dedicated computational software should be pre-installed.
