Overview
The Botany and Plant Physiology programme offered at Pavol Jozef Safárik University in Kosice offers stundents a second-level education focusing on all aspects of plant biology, which is a traditional part of the biological sciences with an increasingly significant impact on agriculture, ecology and the study of biologically active substances in the fields of medicine and pharmacology.
The graduate has comprehensive professional and methodological knowledge from various areas of plant biology, including plant growth, development and metabolism, mineral nutrition, plant physiology under stress conditions, plant ecology, taxonomy, molecular systematics, and evolutionary biology. The graduate has extensive knowledge of modern molecular methods of studying biological objects and trends in the application of methodological procedures in the study of plant biology.
Learning Outcomes
The graduate is able to assess the relationships and interactions between plants, soil and microorganisms. He/she understands the importance of plants to other components of the biosphere as well as to human society. He/she can creatively and independently apply the acquired knowledge in solving practical or scientific problems associated with the study of plant biology.
The graduate is able to apply analytical methods for the evaluation of substances in plants, enzyme activity and expression of their genes. He/she is able to carry out laboratory research in the field of plant physiology with a high degree of independence, from the preparation of experiments to the evaluation of data. Furthermore, the graduate will acquire skills in cultivating plants in vitro, preparing samples for microscopic analysis and a general overview of imaging methods.
Within botany, the graduate will acquire skills in field data collection, floristic mapping of biodiversity, he/she will be able to apply a wide range of morphometric, cytogenetic and molecular methods and analytical tools in biodiversity research.
