Overview
Students enrolled at the Master of Science in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Universidade Nova de Lisboa eepen their training in the development, design, optimization and digitalization of chemical and biological processes with strong industrial implementation. The transition to a sustainable economy motivates a growing industrialization of biotechnological processes.
Career opportunities
The profession of Chemical and Biological Engineering enjoys enormous prestige worldwide with practically full employability. Chemical and Biological Engineers are key developers of the technologies related to water and air quality, materials, energy, health, food and many others. It is so diversified that it penetrates virtually all industrial and service sectors. Some examples are:
- Energy: petrochemical refining, biorefining and biofuels, development and production of efficient solar panels, batteries and fuel cells for automobiles, Hydrogen industry, etc.
- Materials: sustainable polymers and biopolymers, biodegradable plastics and bioplastics, cement industry, paints, glues and varnishes, thermal and acoustic insulating materials, etc.
- Health: Pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry, focusing on large-scale production of drugs (synthetic chemical-based active ingredients) and biopharmaceuticals (bio-based active ingredient, for example vaccines).
- Environment: drinking water captation and treatment, wastewater treatment and recovery, CO2 sequestration to mitigate global warming, elimination of sources of pollution, etc.
- In addition to a technology oriented career, Chemical and Biological Engineers have a strong tradition in business management, innovation and the creation of new businesses. Leveraged by a strong tradition, Chemical and Biological Engineering professionals are at the forefront of future sustainability challenges, in the development and large scale production of clean energy sources, biodegradable and sustainable materials, in the recycling of by-products and waste, in quality air and global warming control, in the availability and universalization of affordable drugs on a planetary scale.
