Specialisations
During the Learning Intervention program at University of Melbourne you will learn how to implement evidence-based teaching that optimises student learning while specialising in one of the following:- Disability: With a focus on inclusion and promoting positive behaviour and learning, this specialisation is ideal for building an understanding of the learning and programming needs of children and young people with disabilities enrolled in early childhood settings, mainstream and specialist schools.
- Specific Learning Difficulties: Investigate the areas of learning difficulties, intervention and individual differences in literacy, numeracy and language learning. Improve your professional knowledge and understanding of the nature and causes of specific learning difficulties in children and explore how to implement teaching that optimises student learning.
- Deaf Education: Gain an understanding of deaf education and learn strategies for assessing, supporting and promoting communication, language and literacy development in students with a hearing loss. Ideal for those interested in working as a Teacher of the Deaf in a mainstream setting or school for the deaf.
The Master of Learning Intervention has two streams depending on your profession or desired outcomes.
Stream A is suitable for teachers who are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and seeking a further qualification in special education. Stream A students may already have worked with people with disabilities, people who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) or learning difficulties in other community contexts.
- Stream B is suitable for allied health practitioners, early childhood educators and international students who wish to increase their understanding and skills in learning intervention.

- A four-year education degree, or equivalent, or
- A three-year undergraduate qualification and a fourth-year level education qualification, or
- A three-year undergraduate qualification in an area related to education (such as social work, speech pathology, psychology or occupational therapy) and at least two years of documented, relevant work experience.
Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider prior academic performance and work experience if relevant.
