You’ll receive personalized training and performance-centred experience in solo, chamber and large ensemble settings.

This Performance in String Quartet program at University of Victoria also includes seminar classes on music theory, history and style. The MMus degree program may also serve as an academic pathway to further specialized research at the DMA/PhD level.

Outcomes

Students in this program will:

hone skills and focus as an ensemble

develop expertise in all eras of repertoire in order to prepare for a professional career

develop a cohesive sound (through bow movement, vibrato, articulation, expressive intonation)

develop a transparency and balance in ensemble playing that communicates the notes from the page to the audience in a coherent and beautiful way

develop requisite business skills to pursue a professional career as a string quartet

support in seeking connections and competitions which will provide career and musical opportunities

conversation and workshops with supervisors around the challenges of this particular intensive collaborative work to foster leadership, consensus, healthy and respectful discourse and teamwork: values and skills beneficial to all aspects of life and extending beyond the quartet experience
