Overview
The Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory MSc programme at Leiden University focuses on number theory in the broadest sense, ranging from discrete dynamical systems to arithmetic geometry and motives. There is a strong emphasis on algebraic methods and a direct interest in the computational aspects of the theory. The programme also has a cryptology component. Leiden offers courses at an advanced level ranging over topics such as algebraic number theory, algebraic geometry and cryptology.
Why study Mathematics and Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory at Leiden University?
- You have ample opportunity to assemble your own study path: for each student, a programme will be tailored individually.
- We offer master’s thesis topics in a broad range of areas, supervised by world leaders in their fields. Because we only accept a relatively small number of students, you will receive a lot of personal help and attention from your chosen advisor. This allows for ambitious projects which are adapted to suit each individual student.
- The programme is linked to the Erasmus Mundus study programme ALGANT – an EU funded international master’s programme in algebra, geometry and number theory.
Career Opportunities
The Mathematics Master’s programme is an ideal basis for a career in academia, starting for example with one of the PhD programmes at the Leiden Mathematical Institute. Alumni also work as researchers within an industrial environment, such as in Akzo-Nobel, Shell, Philips or TNO. There are also many possibilities in business. Graduates with a Mathematics degree find jobs in banks, insurance and option trading companies, communication and information technology, industry, and logistics.
