Overview
The Egyptology (research) MA programme offered at Leiden University gives you the opportunity to study with internationally acclaimed academics immersed in the latest research and engaged in actively expanding our knowledge of the field.
You will be able to tailor your study programme to your personal interests by creating your own combination of courses from the Egyptology programme or from other research master’s programmes within the Faculties of Humanities and of Archaeology.
We encourage all student to consider applying for a study time abroad. The specialisation Egyptology (Research) programme welcomes initiatives by students, e.g. to follow research programmes in Cairo or in another European university, to join excavations in Egypt or to do an internship in a museum.

General requirements
The following diploma requirements apply for this programme:
- A Bachelor’s degree from a research university, equivalent to the level of a Dutch academic Bachelor’s degree, and you should have knowledge of at least one of the following:
- the grammar of the most important phases of the Egyptian language, of the relevant scripts and of the historical development of the language and scripts;
- the archaeology, the material culture and art history of the region involved;
- the cultural history of the region involved, including its literature, its religion, and its social structure.
