Overview
The University of Skövde's Systems Biology with Specialization in Bioinformatics programme lasts two years and includes in-depth research-oriented courses in systems biology and bioinformatics.
Recent advances in biotechnology have revolutionised our ability to understand biological systems at multiple molecular layers. This opens powerful ways of studying the underlying mechanisms behind health and disease. Bioinformatics and systems biology provide the competences needed to translate large-scale biological data into new knowledge.
Students at the University of Skövde will:
- study advanced courses in bioinformatics, programming, experimental design and current research topics. during the first part of the programme;
- study advanced courses in multivariate statistics, expression data analysis, network analysis and systems biology, during the second part of the programme;
- study next-generation sequencing data analysis, library preparation and quality control, during the third part of the programme;
- gain a solid foundation in research methodologies used in bioinformatics and systems biology.
The programme is concluded with a master’s degree project during the second year.
In this project, you will formulate and solve a relevant research problem, allowing you to combine your theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The degree project work is performed independently under the direction of a qualified supervisor from the University of Skövde.
The work can be carried out at the university, at one of our partner companies, or other universities, companies or research institutes.

Other requirements
General requirements
- To be eligible for the program a Bachelor's Degree (equivalent to a Swedish Bachelor’s Degree) with a major in the biological or medical area is required.
The biological area can be defined as e.g. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology or Physiology.
The medical area is here defined as Biomedicine.
- A further requirement is proof of skills in English equivalent of studies at upper secondary level in Sweden, known as English course 6.
This is normally demonstrated by means of an internationally recognized test, e.g. IELTS or TOEFL or the equivalent.
Student insurance
Make sure to cover your health, travel, and stay while studying abroad. Even global coverages can miss important items, so make sure your student insurance ticks all the following:
- Additional medical costs (i.e. dental)
- Repatriation, if something happens to you or your family
- Liability
- Home contents and baggage
- Accidents
- Legal aid
We partnered with Aon to provide you with the best affordable student insurance, for a carefree experience away from home.
