Programme outcomes
On completion of the Tourism Studies program from Södertörn University, students can:
Knowledge and understanding
- at an advanced level, independently describe and critically reflect on the area of tourism studies with a specific focus on urban tourism
- identify and critically examine the current state of research and independently account for in-depth methodological knowledge in the field of tourism studies
Skills and abilities
- integrate knowledge of and about tourism and analyse complex phenomena in the field of tourism, even with limited information
- independently identify and formulate tourism-related issues and plan the implementation of advanced tasks with given methods within given time frames
- in dialogue with different groups, present orally and in writing the conclusions of investigative work and the knowledge on which these are based
- participate in research and development work relevant to the tourism industry and tourism studies
Judgement and approach
- make assessments with regard to relevant scientific, societal and ethical aspects in the discipline of tourism studies
- implement well-founded and relevant ethical choices in research and development work
- critically reflect on the possibilities and limitations of science, its role in society and people’s responsibility for how it is used,
- identify their need for additional knowledge in the area of tourism and take responsibility for their own knowledge development
Programme Structure
Structure:
- The Master's programme is based on a multidisciplinary and international urban approach. The programme is characterised by strong links to research, independent work by the students and advanced analysis of private travel, residential recreation and business travel.
- Each student chooses an overall thematic focus for the programme, based on the research areas the subject focuses on. The role and significance of tourism phenomena are considered in terms of societal perspective on sustainability. Events and their role in the tourism system are studied, as are their impact on society and the tourism industry.
- The programme also examines hospitality and management, the relevance of information technology in the travel process, and how urban destinations are planned and managed.
