Overview

The programme is geared towards specialization in one of the following three topics, one of which is offered every two-year cycle: "The Greek Element in Anglophone Literature and Culture," "Anglophone Theatre from the Renaissance to the Present," and "Nineteenth- and Twentieth- Century Anglophone Literature and Culture".

Aims and Objectives

English Studies - Literature And Culture programme at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) is geared towards students who have a background in the study of Anglophone Literature and Culture and are familiar with twentieth-century theories of literary and cultural criticism. Intended to educate a broad range of humanities graduates the programme trains participants to:

think critically about a literary work in relation to 20th c. literary theories
investigate literary representations of cultural categories such as gender,, race, or class, and approach literature as a cultural practice, affected by history and society
employ criticism and explore texts, critical theory and cultural conditions that are relevant to their lives and prospects.

Certification of English language proficiency (at level C2 “excellent knowledge”) for candidates who are not graduates of English language and literature departments
Certification of Greek language proficiency (at level Β1/Β2 “good knowledge”) for non-Greek candidates (desirable but not essential)
Two research papers submitted and graded in the context of a related undergraduate or postgraduate programme of studies
