As a Master of Civil Engineering , you will be trained to take a leading role for a managerial role in the construction sector. You will actively contribute to the development, quality and sustainability of our built environment. With ever-increasing demands on all of these aspects, new challenges arise for civil engineers. The field of work covers a broad spectrum, from building materials over buildings and construction to the global environment. Your education is aimed at developing analytical and problem-solving abilities and imparting sound scientific-technical knowledge, embedded in a general academic background.
Programme strengths
- There is a strong interaction between research and education. This is emphasised in the research component of the master's thesis, where all subjects situate within ongoing research at the Department of Civil Engineering.
- The programme closely links up with construction industry and brings you into contact with the practice of the engineering profession. In addition to the input of guest lecturers, visits to companies and construction sites are also organised on a regular basis.
- With the Erasmus programme you can study abroad. In addition, you can apply for an industrial internship abroad. The Faculty of Engineering Science is also a member of the BEST network (the Board of European Students of Technology), which enables you to take short courses abroad. The Faculty is also part of the international networks CESAER, CLUSTER and SEFI.

The programme offers the choice between two options founded upon a common core, both resulting in a strong own profile that corresponds with specific needs in the industry. The common core of the Master in Civil Engineering provides a solid foundation for the specialization in either of the two options, and also covers a number of generic aspects that are important in the design, management and execution of construction projects.
The focus of the two options is:
- The Structural Engineering option prepares you for the structural design of buildings and infrastructure (roads, bridges, tunnels, etc.), ensuring that all loads can be handled in a safe and efficient way.
- The Hydraulic Engineering option prepares you for water management (sewerage, water distribution, ...) and water infrastructure (locks, coastal protection, ...), taking into account aspects of the environment and climate change.
Audience
The ideal candidate is familiar with various aspects of civil engineering, be it scientific, technological or social; in your previous education you acquired a broad and diverse basis of technical knowledge at all levels, from material to component and building to infrastructure. You should be prepared to immerse yourself in certain subjects and at the same time broaden your horizons.
