Overview
Students will have the chance to offer different options namely: Hydrogeology, Engineering geology, Stratigraphy, Mineral exploration, Geophysics, Geochemistry and Petrology.
Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of the Geology programme from Makerere University are to train participants to:
- Recognise the key features associated with earth resources in the con-text of their discovery and economic viability.
- Extract geological information from aerial photos, satellite images, geo-physical data and geochemical data.
Programme Structure
- Recognise the environmental impact of minerals/water and their development.
- Develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to work independently on mapping and exploration related projects.
- Recognise the role of geology in civil engineering works to improve of their safety and stability.
- Contribute to environmental and disaster awareness and management.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the programme, the student will have:
- Knowledge and understanding of key areas of specialization, and theoretical basis for methods of analysis and modeling, specific examples of geologic resources assessment and management, and application of worldwide experiences.
- Intellectual skills that include planning; execution and reporting on a significant piece of geoscience research; searching for information and developing ideas; applying appropriate research principles, designs, methods and techniques; and creating new methodologies or research outputs through synthesis of ideas from a wide range of sources.
- Practical skills that include using relevant field and laboratory equipment; carrying out field and laboratory work; applying/using different geoscience techniques, and designing relevant infrastructure.
- Transferable and key skills that include manipulating and presenting geoscience data; using science-based evidence to solve problems; and effectively communicating research findings.
