At History from University of New England you can gain and polish your research, analysis and writing skills, whether you already have a history qualification or are new to the discipline.Gain advanced knowledge of history as a discipline, specialised knowledge of historical periods of your choice, and the skills required to write history.


History from University of New England covers three distinct areas: discipline knowledge; a choice of area studies; and the writing of history.

You will start out by exploring the nature of history, then progress to specialised studies of historical periods and problems. Towards the end of your degree you will have the opportunity to undertake substantial historical research projects, including writing for publication.

When you graduate you will have all the necessary attributes to become a professional historian, but the skills you have acquired are also highly portable and adaptable, helping you to future proof your career.


You’ll graduate with knowledge and skills in critical analysis, research and writing that are transferable across a range of professions. With greater experience and versatility, you will be ready to choose from a range of professional pathways, including:

  • an AQF Level 7 Bachelor qualification with a major in History or relevant discipline; or
  • an AQF Level 8 Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Bachelor with Honours or AQF Level 9 Masters qualification in History or relevant discipline
  • overseas secondary qualifications or tertiary qualifications deemed equivalent to Australian qualifications;
  • relevant professional experience demonstrated to be at sufficient skill level and duration of time that satisfies the University that the applicant possesses the capacity to succeed in their chosen course;
