Theatre and Performance from University of New England is a creative practice and research course, integrating theoretical and practical study. At the core of the course is a substantial creative project* which you undertake as playwright, director, actor, designer or drama educator, and on which you write a short dissertation which builds in the knowledge and understanding gained through the creative work.


By enhancing your experience in both theoretical and creative practice, you’ll be paving your career path in the direction of your choice. Examples of careers that can be assisted through a Master of Theatre and Performance include:

Other requirements

General requirements

  • hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor qualification with a major or equivalent in Theatre Studies and have 2 years experience as a performer or director or designer or playwright or teacher; or
  • hold an AQF Level 8 Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Bachelor with Honours or AQF Level 9 Masters qualification in a relevant discipline*; and
  • all applicants must submit a preliminary research proposal (approximately 500-800 words) which should: describe their proposed creative project for the Master of Theatre and Performance course; include a rationale for the choice of creative work in the context of the overall research project and explain why this is significant; and include a short reference list.
  • overseas secondary qualifications or tertiary qualifications deemed equivalent to Australian qualifications;
  • relevant professional experience
