Overview
The MS in mechanical engineering is a two-year graduate programme at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, part of the University of Iceland's School of Engineering and Natural Sciences.

At the conclusion of Sociology programme at University of Iceland, the student shall be able to demonstrate knowledge, ability and skills beyond that achieved at the previous level, as listed below:
- The student understands the newest knowledge in mechanical engineering.
- The student has knowledge and skills to analyse and solve complex problems in the various fields of specialisation within mechanical engineering. The student must demonstrate independent and creative thinking when solving problems and complete the analysis such that results are clear.
- The student can work autonomously and confidently on practical assignments, can design and specify measurements, select tools and equipment for measuring, review results, identify uncertainty factors and make reports in technical format.
- The student can apply modern calculation methods and tools in solving technical problems, including graph and drawing software, programming languages and environments and design/analysing software.
- The student has extensive knowledge of statics, theory of vibrations and of machine elements and can apply insight when analysing complex problems in this theoretical field.
- The student has extensive knowledge of manufacturing processes and of design methods.
- The student has extensive knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics and can apply it on real systems and understands their functionality and their limitations.
- The student has extensive knowledge and understanding of automatic control systems and can apply complex methods in solving statistical problems.

General requirements
- Applicants must have completed a BS degree in mechanical engineering or similar subjects at the University of Iceland, or a comparable degree from another University with a grade point average of at least 6.5 on a scale from 1-10. Additional Prerequisites courses may be required.
- Applicants are asked to submit a letter of motivation, 1 pages, where they should state the reasons they want to pursue graduate work, their academic goals and a suggestion or outline for a final paper.
- Letters of recommendation (2) should be submitted. These should be from faculty members or others who are familiar with your academic work and qualified to evaluate your potential for graduate study
