Overview
Computational Mechanics had a profound impact on science and technology in recent decades and is now a key area of research and application worldwide. Solid Mechanics and Computational Fluid Mechanics constituted the core of development of Computational Mechanics.
Overview
Nowadays it goes beyond these areas, with vast applications in other areas such as Biology, Medicine and Bioengineering. Computer codes based on based on Computational Mechanics are extensively used in industry, worldwide, to design, develop and optimize products and production processes.
Given this reality, it is intended to provide a curriculum focused on the basics and fundamentals of these computer codes, in a more comprehensive, specialized and advanced way than what is currently provided by existing training offered at FEUP.
Students of the Computational Mechanics programme of the University of Porto are expected to develop technical and scientific skills of some extensive depth in this area, namely: computational mechanics skills, with application in both solids and fluids mechanics; of creation, formulation, analysis and development of computational tools for simulation of mechanical phenomena in engineering complex problems; skills in understanding the complex approaches that currently characterize Computational Mechanics, allowing its application in different areas of science and engineering; skills meant for the proper use of the existing codes in computational mechanics, including simulation for specific applications required by industry.
Students are also expected to develop a profile for labour market integration guided by spirit of initiative, independence, creativity and responsibility. Thus, during the Masters students will attend classes in which these components are addressed and highlighted; they will be involved in computational projects that propitiate the development of the skills listed above. The preparation of the final Master Thesis will also integrate, converge and consolidate the knowledge gained throughout the course in developing a project in which the studied models studied can be applied.
