About

Computational Mechanics offered by the University of Porto had a profound impact on science and technology in recent decades and is now a key area of research and application worldwide. Solid Mechanics and Computational Fluid Mechanics constituted the core of development of Computational Mechanics.

Overview

Program Overview

Nowadays it goes beyond these areas, with vast applications in other areas such as Biology, Medicine and Bioengineering. Computer codes based on based on Computational Mechanics are extensively used in industry, worldwide, to design, develop and optimize products and production processes. Given this reality, it is intended to provide a curriculum focused on the basics and fundamentals of these computer codes, in a more comprehensive, specialized and advanced way than what is currently provided by existing training offered at FEUP. The M.Sc. in Computational Mechanics is structured with the mission to train engineering professionals in the competitive global labor market, with the competence to act as change agents.

Students of the Computational Mechanics degree offered by the University of Porto are expected to develop technical and scientific skills of some extensive depth in this area, namely: computational mechanics skills, with application in both solids and fluids mechanics; of creation, formulation, analysis and development of computational tools for simulation of mechanical phenomena in engineering complex problems; skills in understanding the complex approaches that currently characterize Computational Mechanics, allowing its application in different areas of science and engineering; skills meant for the proper use of the existing codes in computational mechanics, including simulation for specific applications required by industry. Students are also expected to develop a profile for labour market integration guided by spirit of initiative, independence, creativity and responsibility. Thus, during the Masters students will attend classes in which these components are addressed and highlighted; they will be involved in computational projects that propitiate the development of the skills listed above. The preparation of the final Master Thesis will also integrate, converge and consolidate the knowledge gained throughout the course in developing a project in which the studied models studied can be applied.

Academic requirements

GPA admission requirements GPA Your GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a number that indicates how well or how high you scored in your courses on average. Usually a GPA scales between 1.0 and 4.0, however different countries and universities can have different grading systems.
GRE admission requirements GRE® The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. It contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.
GMAT admission requirements GMAT The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a test intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program, such as an MBA. GMAT contains 4 sections - Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative and Verbal. The score has a range from 200 - 800.

English requirements

IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).
TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at desiganated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
PTE Academic admission requirements PTE Academic PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. The score refers to a total score which ranges between 10 and 90.
