Overview

Students will examine the impact of globalisation on sources and subjects of international law. Additional areas of study include recent developments in the areas of international economic law, environmental  protection,  and governmental responsibility, as well as pertinent issues that, in recent years,  have confronted international society.

Emphasis is placed upon subjects relating to the regulation of international trade, as well as investment law and the settlement of international disputes. Within these paramters, particular attention will be focused upon subjects such as international arbitration and procedures brought before the World Trade Organization and the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

Key Features

Following successful completion of the International Law programme from Heidelberg University, graduates will have the ability  to:

• Demonstrate an awareness of the sources of international law, the way in which these sources originate, the interrelationship between the various sources, and the ways in which these sources are utilised by international lawyers
• Demonstrate a sound understanding of the basic principles of international law
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of how international legal principles are implemented into, and interact with, domestic law
• Engage in theoretical discussion of the basic principles of international law, with special emphasis on international commercial law, international investment law, and international arbitration, and apply these principles to specific cases.
