Overview
The Master of Arts in Islands and Small States Studies from University of Malta aims to impart knowledge on Islands and Small State issues and to provide the opportunity to conduct research on the same issues by submitting assignments and writing a dissertation.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Apply the concept of sustainable development in international law.
- Apply techniques for ‘measuring’ the effect of climate change including temperature, precipitation and sea-level rise and assess the ‘best predictions’ of current climate models.
- Develop skills in assessing risks and in proposing policy approaches to build disaster resilience.
- Undertake an in-depth analysis of social and political realities in territories characterised by small population size and insularity, enabling you to identify situations where a one-size-fits-all policy measures may not be appropriate for social development and political governance.
- Undertake an in-depth analysis of economic and environmental realities in territories characterised by small population size and insularity.

- The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of a Bachelor's degree with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II in an area of study deemed relevant by the Board.
- In exceptional cases the Admissions Board, on the recommendation of the Board, may admit into the Course applicants not in possession of a Bachelor's degree, provided that it is satisfied that such applicants are in possession of other academic or professional qualifications and experience that together are deemed to be comparable to the level of a first degree.
