What you will study

The fully accredited MSc Civil Engineering at the University of Surrey will help you acquire advanced capabilities and in-depth knowledge across a range of civil engineering disciplines including structural engineering, construction management, geotechnical engineering and water/environmental engineering, allowing you to tailor your degree according to your aspirations.

This course offers six study streams: bridge/structural engineering, construction management, geotechnical engineering, water/environmental engineering, and infrastructure management.

If you’re an engineer working in the construction industry and hold a related degree such as engineering geology or construction management, this course will provide you with the opportunity to expand on your existing knowledge and skills. It is also designed to update the technical skills of practising engineers engaged in the planning, design, construction and operation of civil engineering works.


Accredited by CIHT as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer under the provisions of UK-SPEC for candidates that have already acquired a CEng accredited BEng(Hons) undergraduate first degree.

General requirements

  • A minimum of 60 per cent in a UK honours degree in civil engineering accredited to CEng, with a minimum of 60 per cent in Structures and Codified Design subjects, Management and Soil Mechanics / Geotechnics subjects.
  • Alternatively, a minimum of 70 per cent in a UK honours degree in civil engineering accredited to IEng, plus approval from the relevant institution. Overseas equivalent qualifications are also accepted.
  • Alternatively, at least five years’ relevant industrial experience (preferably codified design) or a professional qualification (for example, CEng).
