The MSc in Mining Engineering program at Nazarbayev University aims to produce engineering specialists who can design, operate and manage mining operations as well as develop research skills and knowledge to provide support to the mining industry to have safe, environmentally friendly and economically viable mining operations. 


The Master of Science (MSc) in Mining Engineering degree at Nazarbayev University is a specialized graduate program offered by the School of Mining and Geosciences (SMG) Department of Mining Engineering at Nazarbayev University (NU). Students are required to complete 120 ECTS credits, in 4 semesters, which satisfies requirements stipulated by the Bologna Process and the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) for Master’s Degrees. 

The programme

The program is designed to establish advanced skills and a detailed knowledge base at the graduate level for individuals working in academia, industry or research settings in Kazakhstan or throughout the world. The School partners with local and international universities and companies, including Colorado School of Mines in the USA.

Programme Structure

  • The first year of the degree covers the advanced level of knowledge in mining engineering and prepares the student to conduct research in the second year of their studies. 
  • In the second year, students are expected to develop and practice research within the area of mining engineering discipline. Furthermore, the program will also give students a wide variety of the skills in problem solving, teamwork and effective communications. 
  • The program covers a broader spectrum of the Mining Engineering field with a stronger research emphasis, rather than being area-specific.

    The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

  • IELTS or TOEFL test report/certificate valid as of date of online documents submission to the MSc in Mining Engineering /MSc in Petroleum Engineering program;
  • Official copy of Passport/national ID (with notarized English translation);
  • GRE test reports/certificates (OPTIONAL) 
  • a curriculum vitae (up to 2 pages);
  • a statement of purpose for graduate studies (up to 500 words);
  • two letters of recommendation

  • Accommodation - 30 000 KZT (about 80 USD) per semester. 
  • Food on campus- 26400 tenge (around 70 USD).
