Overview
The Planning programme at the University of British Columbia is a professionally oriented master level course designed to equip students with the analytical tools required to solve complex societal problems. This curriculum addresses critical contemporary issues such as climate change, systemic injustice, and the development of resilient communities. Students engage in a transdisciplinary environment that merges theoretical frameworks with practical applications to improve the quality of built and natural environments.
Why Planning at the University of British Columbia?
The School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) is one of the largest graduate planning institutions in North America, offering a unique dual-accredited degree. It is one of only two schools in Canada to hold accreditation from both the Canadian Institute of Planners and the American Institute of Certified Planners. This status ensures that graduates emerge as recognised experts capable of practising professionally across North America.
The programme is distinguished by its "knowledge in action" philosophy, which integrates the expertise of resident faculty with that of active practitioners. Located in Vancouver, a city globally acclaimed for urban planning excellence, students benefit from a living laboratory of innovative design. The curriculum emphasises real-world impact, involving intensive partnerships with municipal, private-sector, and community organisations to solve tangible urban challenges.
