Overview

The Egyptology course from the University of Cambridge students may follow either an archaeologically or linguistically oriented pathway. The course provides students with a detailed knowledge of one or more aspects of the cultures of ancient Egypt, with a focus on historical archaeology, landscape and the built environment, art, and the language and/or literature of one or more periods of Egypt's history.

With the possibility of borrowing one or two term-long module(s) from other MPhil programmes in the department, students will have the opportunity to place the specific Egyptian case in context, for example by comparing it with contemporary Mesopotamia, by learning methodologies for particular research projects, or by using it to address general and theoretical issues in the study of early societies and cultural heritage.

Students will acquire a good working knowledge of the archaeology and culture of ancient Egypt, with the possibility of studying one or more of the principal ancient Egyptian language phases.

Students may focus on either linguistic or archaeological study. Students learn to participate in an academic discussion at postgraduate level and produce a substantial piece of independent written work.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

The MPhil in Egyptology delivers competence in language and detailed knowledge of the cultures of ancient Egypt, emphasizing historical archaeology, landscape, and the built environment, art, and the language and literature of ancient Egypt. All MPhil students in the Department of Archaeology take a Research Skills module and write a dissertation.

The MPhil in Egyptology also includes taught modules, chosen in consultation with the supervisor according to the student's interests. Students will learn an Ancient Egyptian language at either an introductory or more advanced level depending on previous experience.
