The department houses the disciplines of Logistics Management, Operations Research, Quantitative Management and Transport Economics and is the only department at a South African university, the Stellenbosch University, fully offering the various disciplines integrated in one department.

Mathematical, statistical and computer models are used in operations research and quantitative management to find optimal (or near optimal) solutions to complex problems. The underlying philosophy of these subjects is to improve systems efficiently and systematically, by improving one or more (sometimes conflicting) goals.

To be admitted to the MCom (Operations Research) programme (Coursework and Thesis option or Full Thesis option) a student must be in possession of a BComHons degree in Operations Research or a qualification considered by the Department of Logistics to be of equal standing
