About the program

Located in the Faculty of Humanities in the burgeoning cultural hub of Johannesburg’s city bowl, the School of Literature, Language and Media (SLLM) contributes to the vibrant literary and intellectual life of the city and offers students the opportunity to explore the implications of social and cultural diversity through the study of language, literature, writing, media studies, policy and regulation in the electronic communications and Internet sectors.

The School is home to top international scholars, including one of the few A-rated academics in literary studies, and prides itself on its high standard of teaching. Applied Linguistics course is offered at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg

Programme Structure

The Faculty offers an extensive range of programmes, some of which are vocationally oriented and lead to careers in specific professions, while others are theory and research oriented and impart critical analytical skills that open up to a range of careers in academia and research institutes, the public and private sectors and non-governmental organisations alike.

A bachelors degree or equivalent with 65% course mark aggregate in a third year major.
At least an upper second class pass in the final undergraduate course in the subject.

Masters by Coursework and Research Report:

A bachelors degree with honours from Wits or another university with a 65% total mark aggregate.

Masters by Dissertation:

A bachelors degree with honours from Wits or another university with a 65% total mark aggregate.
A supervisor from the Faculty of Humanities must be identified and approached prior to application.
