Study at three prestigious universitiesYou will spend a trimester at each of the three prestigious academic partner institutions, receiving specialist courses, lectures, seminars, and individual tutorials. During your studies you will develop the specific research skills and knowledge to produce a significant piece of your own quality research in this field. You will graduate with a certificate from the Europaeum, an association of Europe's top ten universities, in addition to your MA in History degree from Leiden University.

Programme Structure
First trimester, Leiden University
- Europaeum – Historiography (5 EC)
- Introduction to the History of States and Nations in Europe (5 EC)
- Optional Course History (10 EC)
- 5000-word proposal for a MA-thesis, under supervision of an academic member of the Leiden History Department
Second trimester, Université Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne)
- Transatlantic Relations and Identities (10 EC)
- Europe through the Ages/The historic foundations of Europe: identities and civilizations (10 EC)
Third trimester, Oxford University
The third trimester will take place at Oxford and includes personal supervising tutorials for the individual thesis, as well as weekly seminars. These weekly seminars will be tailor-made for Europaeum students. The activities at Oxford University will be concluded by the MA thesis (20 EC).

General requirements
- A bachelor’s degree from a university, equivalent to the level of a Dutch academic bachelor’s degree, with good results.
- Knowledge, understanding and skills comparable to those acquired upon graduating from the Bachelor’s programme in History from Leiden University, specifically:
- Ability to conduct independent empirical research.
- Ability to read academic literature and reflect critically on it.
- Knowledge of general history and the ability to present findings (based on a critical reading of the literature or based on empirical research) in a systematic and analytical manner.
- Ability to write a thesis with proper references to the literature.
- In their previous education applicants should have acquired knowledge and skills that are relevant to the theme of the specialisation MA Europaeum: European History and Civilisation: Leiden-Oxford-Paris Programme.
- Sufficient command of English (IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 100 (internet-based) or Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)). For a list of exceptions, see the website on language requirements.
- Reading knowledge of French and German is preferred.
