Overview

Once you have enrolled on the PGCE primary course, you can opt to specialise either in working with 3-7 year olds or 5-11 year olds or 7-11 year olds. Students on the 3-7 specialism will undertake two placements, one in in the Early Years Foundation Stage and one in Key Stage 1. Students on the 5-11 specialism will undertake two placements, one in Key Stage 1 and one in Key Stage 2. Students on the 7-11 specialism will undertake two placements, one in Lower Key Stage 2 and one in Upper Key Stage 2.

The Primary with Mathematics Specialism (QTS) degree offered at the University of Birmingham programme will include the study of subject-specific teaching techniques as well as wider professional topics.

General requirements

All applicants to the PGCE Primary with Mathematics Specialism (QTS) must hold a degree from a UK Higher Education Institution. Normally, this should be a 2:2 or above (and this will be a condition of any offer where the degree is not already awarded).You must also:

have GCSE Mathematics (Grade7/A or above) and English and Science (Grade 4/C or above) or equivalent qualifications, which will be a condition of any offer if not already achieved (equivalency tests will be accepted, but only from equivalency testing)

complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before taking up a place

complete relevant checks to ensure you have the health and physical capacity to teach

agree to abide by the University of Birmingham Code of Professional Conduct and Fitness to Practise
