Experience the collaborative nature of the MFA Arts & Humanities as you work alongside writers, filmmakers, performers, artists and curators. Expand your thinking through external speakers from a range of backgrounds, such as contemporary artists, filmmakers, architects, authors, historians, curators, economists, and performers.
Our programme will help you to situate and adjust your practice through a deeper understanding of the conditions shaping it, and help you build a global community for the future.
The Arts & Humanities MFA can be studied as a full-time or a part-time programme.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- In Term 1 you take Interrogating Your Practice and Deconstructing Assumptions, building tools to critique and rethink your practice. You explore techniques, collections, and environments, and join a Platform within a small research-led group through tutorials, workshops, site visits, seminars, and critiques to develop experimental, self-directed work. In Term 2 Developing Methodologies focuses on researching and experimenting with material culture, building a coherent methodology and proposal for the Independent Research Project. You also take Urgency of the Arts, exploring how arts practice responds to urgent socio-political issues. In Term 3 the Independent Research Project produces a body of work for exhibition, critical reflection, and a print-ready portfolio with staff support. AcrossRCA in Terms 1–2 enables collaboration on themed projects addressing cultural, social, environmental, or economic issues.

General requirements
We welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds and from all over the world.
RCA alumni come from a wide range of backgrounds and industries, bringing diverse experiences including those unrelated to art, which enrich the creative community and drive fresh perspectives.
As part of your application, you may need to submit:
- A portfolio showcasing your work and artistic vision.
- A personal statement (around 300 words) describing your interests, motivations, and future goals.
- An introduction video (maximum 2 minutes) to introduce yourself and explain your artistic approach and project ideas.
