This two-year master’s programme comprises advanced courses regarding biotechnology tools used for the analysis of complex biological samples for research purposes, as well as for health care within diagnostics and drug development. State-of-the-art techniques used to interrogate biological systems, such as the microbiome, are covered, with an emphasis on high-throughput technological platforms and the analysis of biological information. 

The master’s programme in Medical Biotechnology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology offers courses with a focus on five subject areas: medical applications of biotechnology, omics, cell-based process biotechnology, enzyme biotechnology and environmental biotechnology. The courses are tailored to provide a holistic perspective on the use of biotechnology and comprise both theoretical knowledge and practical application of theory from experimental design to bioinformatic and statistical analysis of raw data and interpretation of results. 

The curriculum provides a cross-platform approach to education enabling students to acquire a unique and individualised profile of expertise. Skills such as problem-solving and project management as well as professional communication are emphasised on several courses. The programme curriculum is designed, thought out and continuously updated by a team of internationally recognised researchers within the different subject areas.

A Bachelor´s degree, corresponding to at least 180 ECTS, including courses in:

  • Cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology and gene technology/molecular biology corresponding to a total of at least 20 ECTS
  • Chemistry of at least 30 ECTS
  • Mathematics, numerical analysis and computer science corresponding to a total of at least 20 ECTS
