Key facts
The new program is structured to have 2 streams; stream I, is Environmental Science and Development and Stream II, is Sustainable Urbanism. The program is designed to boost students’ professional practice skills to enhance their career prospects in Environmental Science, Sustainable Development and Sustainable Urbanism.
The curriculum of the Environment and Sustainable Development programme of University of Bahrain is designed to give students diverse educational skills. It involves various learning methods including lectures, field visits, self-studies, multidisciplinary projects, and case studies. The research project in the ESD thesis could pursue interests in almost all areas of environmental protection and sustainable development such as energy, water, waste, transportation, pollution, radiation protection and measurements. The M.Sc. in ESD courses are delivered by instructors from colleges and departments across the University of Bahrain, and the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community (UK), and in collaboration with a comprehensive range of governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Program Objectives
- Providing graduates from diverse disciplinary backgrounds with a high level of knowledge of the most recent and emerging concepts surrounding the environment and sustainability.
- Training of highly qualified policy decision-makers and environmental managers who will be involved in assessments and the design and implementation of environmental policies.
- Developing a theoretical understanding of the economic forces that contribute to the development of settlements, including the cycles of urban growth, maturity, decay and renewal, and economics for community cohesion and robustness.
- Developing students’ appreciation of the range of problems caused by an excessive reliance on fossil fuel-powered energy and the solutions.
- Allowing students to develop a comprehensive understanding of sustainable environment issues.
- Promoting the use of proper research methodology and tools related to environment and sustainable development.
- Providing graduates with basic skills for implementing scientific research strategies including collection, evaluation, and interpretation of environmental data.

- Fulfill the university requirements for admission to postgraduate studies
- Hold a B.Sc. Degree in the required discipline or a related field to the required discipline (full-time study) from a recognized university, with a minimum GPA of 2.67 out of 4.00 based on the grade point system, or equivalent
- Meet the Proficiency in English language requirement for postgraduate admission
- Pass a written qualifying exam
- Pass a personal interview
