Overview
UToledo offers broad foundational course work and specialized, evidence-based training in the assessment and treatment of communication disorders.
Clinical practicum is an integral part of the curriculum. SLP graduate students have more than 550 hours of clinical practicum related to treatment approaches and techniques they learn in the classroom.
Students in the Speech-Language Pathology program of The University of Toledo are prepared to:
- Meet the academic and clinical requirements for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence
- Sit for the Praxis exam in speech-language pathology
- Obtain employment as clinical fellows
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills required of competent, entry-level speech-language pathologists
Speech-Language Pathology Master's Degree Highlights
Solid preparation for certification and licensure. UToledo provides graduate students with the necessary courses and clinical experiences to apply for:
- The Certification of Clinical Competence by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association — the only professional credential for speech-language pathologists recognized in every state. Most clinics, hospitals and other service facilities require employees to have the CCC. During the past four years, 100% of master's students have passed the Praxis exam, a requirement for earning a CCC.
- The Ohio state license — required to practice in Ohio
National accreditation. The master's degree (M.A. SLP) program in speech-language pathology at The University of Toledo is accredited (March 1, 2014-February 28, 2022) by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.
Earn a graduate certificate in teaming in early childhood while earning your master’s degree. Our graduate SLP program collaborates with related academic departments and programs in the College of Health and Human Services to offer this unique opportunity.
Flexibility. UToledo's SLP program has options for part-time enrollment, online continuing-education courses and intensive, specialty clinical training in the summer. Our graduate students are prepared to work as school SLPs.
On-campus clinics. Graduate students get hands-on training and provide speech therapy services to local children in UToledo's Speech-Language Hearing Clinic. Students are supervised by certified, licensed clinicians.
Quality teaching. All speech-language pathology graduate faculty are ASHA-certified and involved with clinical and research activities.
Career Opportunities
100% of graduates from UToledo’s graduate program in speech-language pathology have accepted jobs within six months of graduation. The average, annual starting salary for an entry-level speech-language pathologist is $58,000.
A master’s degree plus certification is necessary to practice as a speech-language pathologist. Teaching and research positions often require a doctoral degree. UToledo’s graduate program advisors can help you learn more about the course work and training you’ll need for a career in speech-language pathology.
Most students who complete our graduate program are employed at facilities in the ProMedica and Mercy health systems in northwest Ohio. Others work for area school systems.

- Four-year Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- GRE Requirement
- The GMAT is only required for applicants with a GPA below 2.7 or applicants seeking Graduate Assistantship opportunities. Applicants with a GPA below 2.7 can be considered for a waiver at the discretion of the Associate Dean
- In addition to the official, final transcripts, you must also provide official certified, or attested copies of all graduation certificates, diplomas or degree certificates needed to fulfill your admission
- TOEFL/IELTS/PTE/Duolingo Requirement
- All international students must also demonstrate adequate financial resources for their graduate education before they can be admitted
