Overview

Students of the English - Literature program of The University of Toledo will learn how to engage in the critical conversation of research and scholarship in English literary studies; and will improve their ability to analyze, explicate, and criticize literary works.

English - Literature program highlights

Graduate classes are small and opportunities for multi-disciplinary and independent study are available. Our literature faculty are dedicated teachers, active researchers, theorists, and writers, with areas of expertise in British, American, and Anglophone literatures, cultural studies, feminism, sexuality and gender studies, comparative literature, theory, and creative writing. Our students come to UT to improve their professional credentials in teaching, publishing, and journalism, to better prepare themselves for PhD programs, and also for personal satisfaction and development. We have a very good record in placing our MA graduates in PhD programs; see our placement page for some of the things our alumni are doing.

General requirements

A baccalaureate degree earned from a department of approved standing and granted by an accredited college or university

A minimum 2.7 cumulative point-hour ratio (on a 4.0 scale) for all previous academic work or indicated performance as explained below

A minimum of a 3.0 average for all English courses taken is expected

Transcripts from all institutions attended must be submitted to the College of Graduate Studies

Prerequisite academic work which gives evidence that the applicant should be able to pursue effectively graduate work in English (whether in literature or writing studies)

All applicants must submit a critical essay on a topic relevant to their concentration (literature or writing studies)

All applicants must submit three letters of recommendation

Applicant's Statement of Purpose

Foreign students who are adequately prepared for graduate study may apply for admission to the College of Graduate Studies
