This programme provides a deep understanding of international and EU law, focusing on key current challenges connected to international conflicts, sustainable development, digitalization, rule of law, and migration. In this programme we focus on how international and EU law mechanisms address such contemporary challenges, while at the same time upholding values that are important for society. The curriculum equips you with the expertise to navigate the evolving relationship between national, European and international law, preparing you for a career in legal practice, policy-making or academia.

With a broad perspective on EU and international law, graduates of the International and EU Legal Orders specialisation are well prepared for careers in research, consultancy, diplomacy, legal practice, and advocacy. Career opportunities span government agencies, NGOs, law firms, and international organisations, as well as institutions such as the European Commission, the UN, the European Central Bank, and international courts and tribunals. The programme equips you with versatile skills to address complex legal challenges and strengthens your legal English proficiency, an asset for careers in international environments.

Programme Structure

This Master's programme offers an in-depth exploration of how international and EU legal frameworks address pressing global challenges, such as international conflicts, sustainable development, digitalisation, the rule of law, and migration. The core curriculum focuses on the mechanisms through which international and EU law uphold fundamental societal values while navigating complex legal landscapes. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic interplay between national, European, and international law, equipping them for careers in legal practice, policy-making, or academia.

The programme consists of one compulsory course, a Master’s thesis, three compulsory elective courses, one elective course and two free elective courses.

Students must have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Law, with an educational level equivalent to a Dutch research university. Students who have obtained their diploma in Indonesia, are required to have obtained a Master's degree in Law (Sarjana Hukum II).

English language tests

TOEFL iBT (2026 onwards): overall score ≥ 90 & all other subscores ≥ 4.5, except for Listening ≥ 5 or overall score ≥ 90 & other subscores ≥ 22.
IELTS Academic: minimum score 6.5 overall (minimum score 6.0 for listening, reading and speaking and 6.5 minimum for writing)

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE): overall score ≥176, subscores ≥169, writing ≥176 or CPE overall score ≥180, subscores ≥169, writing ≥176.

Pearson PTE Academic: Master Minimum: 61 overall & subscores ≥ 56, writing subscore ≥ 61. Pearson PTE Academic UKVI also accepted.
