Overview
The Global Conflict in the Modern Era specialisation of the MA International Relations at Leiden University engages you with the scholarly debates about global conflict today and in the recent past.
During this European Union Studies MA programme at Leiden University you will explore the security measures that have been instituted locally, regionally and globally in the modern world. You will study the patterns of war and peace in the modern world from a multidisciplinary angle, incorporating history, political and social science and area expertise.
The programme examines the core concepts and dominant approaches to the study of war, to subsequently move onto more recent and critical takes on these phenomena. You will also explore the theoretical and empirical explanations for war and peace, that have been offered by the academic scholarship.
In addition you will investigate war, terrorism, insurgency and genocide as prevalent modes of violent expression. Are these phenomena driven by political considerations? Or are there other explanations for the use of violence?
European Union Studies at Leiden University is an accredited degree programme of International Relations. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited master’s degree in International Relations and the title Master of Arts (MA).

The following diploma requirements apply for this programme:
- A bachelor’s degree from a research university that matches the level of a Dutch academic Bachelor’s degree, or demonstrate to meet the requirements for such a degree, including general academic skills;
- the bachelor’s degree should be in the field of social sciences, humanities, law or economics, and;
- a completed minor in European Union Studies at Leiden University or components worth at least 30 credits in the field of contemporary European studies with comparable content and course objectives.
