Description
The Julia Jones Matthews School of Population and Public Health seeks to recruit and retain MPH students, to serve as Public Health Scholars. In support of this goal, the School will award non-competitive scholarships to selected students for the Fall and Spring semesters of appointment as a scholar. Students must be full time.
Scholarships (up to 10 per year) will be awarded to students that have been accepted into the Master of Public Health program or other programs of the school, and who agree to provide service learning activities in their communities. “Service-learning” is defined as a structured learning experience that combines community service with preparation and reflection.
Students engaged in service-learning provide community service in response to community-identified concerns and learn about the context in which the service is provided, the connection between their service and their academic coursework, and their roles as citizens and professionals.
The recipients should show a commitment to the TTUHSC values through their service learning projects as well as their well reflections on the TTUHSC, the School, and the Office of the President.
Students will be required to provide reflection papers at the end of each semester of the year that they are scholars. Scholars will be required to attend in monthly meetings where they will receive guidance on service-learning activities as well as mentoring and career advising in public health.
