The Sanctuary Scholarship supports asylum seekers and other forced migrants who are unable to access UK student finance and are applying for a full-time undergraduate degree at De Montfort University (DMU).

Description

DMU offers eight Sanctuary Scholarships each year to students who have sought sanctuary in the UK and cannot access mainstream student funding. The scholarship aims to remove financial barriers to higher education by covering tuition fees and contributing towards living expenses.

Benefits

100% tuition fee waiver for the duration of the undergraduate course.

Up to £3,500 per year towards living costs.

One recipient also receives free accommodation in a DMU hall of residence for up to three years (subject to eligibility and availability).

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be unable to access UK student finance.

Be one of the following:

  • an asylum seeker in the UK;
  • the dependent or partner of an asylum seeker;
  • a person granted Discretionary Leave to Remain or Limited Leave to Remain following an asylum application.
  • Have applied (or intend to apply) for a full-time undergraduate degree at DMU starting in September.
  • Have the right to study in the UK.

Applicants do not need to have received an offer from DMU before applying for the scholarship.

Complete the Sanctuary Scholarship application form.

Provide evidence of their immigration status (e.g. eVisa documentation).

Submit a professional reference on headed paper (from a tutor, support worker, employer, etc.).

Complete the personal statement sections of the application form.
