Description
The BU Care Leavers Bursary is available to eligible new undergraduate students joining Bournemouth University who have been in full-time care for at least three months within the last five years.
The bursary is awarded automatically to eligible students and is paid throughout the duration of their course, subject to continued eligibility. It is intended to reduce financial barriers and support students throughout their university experience.
Benefits
Up to £9,000 over three years of study.
Up to £12,000 for students undertaking a Foundation Year and paying the higher Foundation Year tuition fee.
£3,000 for eligible Top-up degree students.
Eligibility
- Must have been in full-time care for three months or more within the last five years.
- Must have Home fee status.
- Must be ordinarily resident in England for the required period before starting the course.
- Must be eligible for both the Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan from Student Finance England.
- Must be a new student enrolled on an eligible undergraduate course (full-time or part-time).
- Must have a household income of £25,000 or less.
- Foundation Year students must be paying the higher Foundation Year tuition fee to receive the enhanced award.

There is no separate application. Eligible students are automatically considered provided they:
Complete an income assessment through Student Finance England.
Declare their care leaver status.
Give consent for Student Finance England to share their information with Bournemouth University.
