Description

Northumbria University has announced the continuation of the Sanctuary Scholarship, for those seeking asylum in the UK.

Benefits

The Sanctuary Scholarship is awarded as a 100% tuition fee waiver and a cash sum of £9,000.

The cash award will be paid as: 25% in November 2026, 25% in February 2027, and 50% in May 2027.

Students will receive a 100% tuition fee discount on Full-Time one-year eligible courses studied at Newcastle City Campus and Coach Lane Campus only.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Sanctuary Scholarship, you must:

  • Be currently seeking asylum in the UK, or you must be a dependant, spouse or civil partner* of someone currently seeking asylum in the UK
  • Be able to provide evidence of your current immigration status
  • Have received a conditional or unconditional offer on a Full-Time one-year Masters course at Northumbria University, starting in September 2026
  • Meet all the conditions of your course, including English Language competency requirements
  • Be living in the North East of England (Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland, Cleveland and North Cumbria) prior to the commencement of study and be able to provide an address
  • Be unable to access UK student finance (tuition fee loans and/or maintenance loans) by virtue of your immigration status

You must be able to provide evidence that your asylum application is under consideration by the Home Office and provide up-to-date documentary evidence of your current permission, also showing that you have no restriction on your right to study in the UK (for example, Immigration Bail or other documents).

Applicants need to apply via online written application form; a selection panel will consider all eligible scholarship applications and shortlist for interview.
