Study in Austria student experience: Omar’s journey to a Master’s in Embedded Systems Engineering

When Omar Hussein left Egypt to study abroad, he was looking for more than a degree. He wanted a fresh start, a top-quality education, and the chance to grow both personally and professionally. His search led him to Austria, where he found everything he was looking for — and a few surprises along the way.

  • Omar from Egypt chose Austria for its world-class education, affordable lifestyle, and cultural diversity.
  • He found his Master’s in Embedded Systems Engineering at FH Kärnten through Studyportals and discovered a peaceful study life in Villach, surrounded by mountains and new friendships.
  • His story shows how research, preparation, and openness can turn studying abroad into a rewarding personal journey.

Choosing the perfect Master’s abroad

As a young engineer from Egypt, Omar wanted a programme that would push him technically and open doors internationally. FH Kärnten’s Master’s in Embedded Systems Engineering offered exactly that, with modern facilities, an international learning environment, and a strong industry connection. The university’s location in southern Austria also played a role in his decision — a region close to Italy and Slovenia, where travel and cultural exchange come naturally.

“I am currently pursuing my Master’s study in Embedded Systems Engineering at FH Kärnten in Austria,” says Omar. “Academics and cost were my main concern; however, my choice fulfilled most of the other points.”

“Austria was a very good choice to me.”

What made him want to study abroad

Studying abroad offered Omar the chance to learn through change. He wanted a balance between academic challenge and personal growth — and a setting that would allow him to enjoy life beyond the classroom. Austria offered all that: an excellent education system, affordability, and an inspiring lifestyle surrounded by nature and culture.

“I was seeking a high quality of education and lifestyle, besides enjoying my social life and making new friends away from my comfort zone,” he says. “Yes, Austria was my target at that time because of the city’s location near the borders of Italy and Slovenia.”

Finding the right degree was one of the biggest challenges at the start. Omar knew what he wanted but needed a reliable way to compare universities and courses. That’s when he discovered Studyportals — a platform that gave him a clear overview of study options across Europe.

“Yes, I found my programme through Studyportals,” Omar says. “It helped me during my search for a Master’s programme that fulfilled my criteria, since all information needed is there — tuition, website and programme description.”

He describes Studyportals as the tool that turned hours of scattered online research into a clear direction. Having all the information in one place — from requirements to fees — made comparing options much easier.

Taking the first steps: language tests and preparation

Applying for a Master’s abroad required preparation and commitment. Omar took the IELTS test before applying — a step he found straightforward but essential. His strong English skills made the process smooth, but he quickly realised that communication abroad goes beyond language exams.

“It was quite easier than I expected,” he says. “Improve your language skills and be open-minded to fit into the new community you will live among.”

For him, mastering English was only part of the process; learning basic German helped him feel more integrated and confident in daily life.

Managing costs and balancing student life

Financing his studies abroad was one of Omar’s key concerns. He covered his expenses through personal savings, managing his budget carefully to maintain balance between study and daily life. He also learned that Austria offers flexible part-time work opportunities for international students — useful for those wanting extra income.

“I funded my studies from personal savings,” Omar says, “though there are opportunities for part-time work while studying.”

His practical approach to managing expenses helped him focus on studies while still enjoying his time abroad.

Settling into life in Villach

Villach, where Omar studies, is a peaceful city surrounded by mountains and lakes — ideal for students who prefer a calm and scenic environment. For him, it was a refreshing contrast to big-city life, giving him space to study and reflect. Still, it took some time to adapt to the slower pace and regional dialect.

“Villach is quite a small city,” he says. “So for those who love big-city life and nightlife, it may not be the right choice for you.”

He laughs when describing how quiet evenings contrast with his busy academic schedule. “I would improve my German much more and get used to the Kärnten accent, since it’s quite different,” he adds.

He rates his overall experience a 7 or 8 out of 10, noting that Villach is ideal for students who value calm surroundings and natural beauty.

The biggest surprise about studying in Austria

Austria’s universities are becoming increasingly international — something that surprised Omar when he arrived. He expected mostly foreign students in English-taught programmes but found that many Austrians were also eager to learn in English.

“I was surprised with the number of local Austrians studying programmes taught in English,” he says.

It showed him how education in Austria embraces diversity, connecting students from around the world in classrooms that value both local and global perspectives.

What he learned from studying abroad

Studying in Austria taught Omar the importance of adaptability and self-reliance. He believes every international student should arrive ready to learn — not just in lectures, but from everyday experiences. His time abroad has made him more confident, independent, and curious about the world.

“Be proactive, adaptable, and curious,” he says. “Studying abroad isn’t just about getting a degree — it’s about becoming part of a wider world.”

Omar’s story is a reminder that success abroad comes from planning ahead, embracing new cultures, and being open to change — lessons that last long after graduation.
