History
The Polytechnic Institute of Tomar was created in 1973 but because of the portuguese revolution in 1974, the process of installation did not materialize.
Education
With 23 bachelor’s and 17 master’s degree courses as well as several post-graduate courses, IPT offers a wide range of training areas and constantly reviewed curricula in order to meet entrepreneurial needs.

The IPT is a polytechnic higher education institution, in the European higher education area, with expertise in the areas of science, technology, arts and humanities which, since its inception, have contributed to the higher education of its students, producing useful knowledge, skills, competences and aptitudes, preparing them for the job market and for the exercise of active citizenship in a democratic society”. In order to fulfil its mission, the IPT: a) values the activity of its researchers, teachers and staff, stimulates the intellectual and professional training of its students and ensures the conditions for all duly qualified citizens to have access to higher education and lifelong learning; b) promotes the effective mobility of students and graduates, both nationally and internationally, particularly within the European higher education area and the community of Portuguese-speaking countries; c) participates in activities to connect with society, particularly in the dissemination and transfer of knowledge, as well as in the economic valorisation of scientific knowledge; d) contributes to the public understanding of the humanities, arts, science and technology, promoting and organising actions to support the dissemination of humanistic, artistic, scientific and technological culture, and providing the necessary resources.”
